Road To My Neighbourhood
This is one of Teyjah’s first architectural style paintings. This piece represents how sometimes the mind is not quite ready to see something in your own life; but, someone else can see something about you, recognizing some potential or greatness that you have not yet realized. Teyjah tells the story of this piece.
“I was testing watercolor paints on a watercolour sheet . I had made broad and thin streaks of varying colours when one day while looking at it, I had a eureka moment. I thought why don’t I draw what I see every day on my way to work. So, I did that using pen and ink, filling in shapes over the colour blocks. Later I reflected upon it and decided it was just a practice sheet I had fun with, so therefore it was not good. I had just started to rip it up when my Mom just happened to come by. She looked at it and saw something in it I could not. She said what a fabulous little piece it was, and made me promise I wouldn’t throw it out even though I did not see any talent in it. Over time, it became so popular that I ended up reproducing it. My Mom saw the potential in the abstraction of those first buildings but it took my eye a while to view things abstractly.”
‘Road to My Neighbourhood’ shows a path to the more abstracted cityscapes that Teyjah would progress to from this first early piece. It is an indication of how her mind conceives architecture, and how she would portray it in the future.
