This painting was done entirely from Teyjah’s imagination. She used only her hands to apply the black and white acrylic paint. The impression this painting leaves, is that it could be a raging river, but it is very loose. “It was a totally intuitive painting and I simply responded from one mark to another until a subject matter appeared. What I really enjoy about this painting is the vibrancy it affords. It was all done by hand, with not a single brush mark. It was a very sensual experience painting in this manner because there was a lot of paint being used. It was entirely ‘touchy feely’ moving around that much paint, and I had to take paint off my fingers and then add more paint. It was very freeing, and allowed me to get down and dirty with it. I’ve never done another one like this (she laughs), and I think it took a week to get the paint out of my nails”.
Teyjah tends to be quite particular and tidy about her brushes and the tactile way they feel. She keeps her brushes very clean, so her deviation into a messy style of putting down paint makes this piece unique. It is also different from Teyjah’s usual style of using defined shapes and edges.
