Windblown Vista

Teyjah was teaching, and came into the class with the recall of the lonely pine tree in the famous Tom Thompson painting. This became the image in her mind as she did the class demonstration. “I mixed colour into the pumice, and each layer was done entirely with a palette knife with no brush work at all. It took a little bit of manual dexterity to do this, and this is why most people hate working with pumice. However, once you learn how to manipulate pumice, you start to love it. This painting was what the artist calls ‘a gift’ as it came while teaching. With no intention of creating a profound piece of art, there are times that a great painting just comes out of a demonstration of techniques. As the artist describes, “it didn’t take that long to do this painting…. it was unexpected and it just happened.”
